This talk is co-sponsored with the Eau Claire Public Library.

It will be held at the Library on Saturday, March 16th.

The same presentation will be given at 11:00 am and 2:00 pm.

Marilyn Saffert will speak on Hydrangeas – Let’s Get Them Figured Out.

Marilyn Saffert has been a Barron County Master Gardener for the past 24 years and has been a member of the Rice Lake Area Garden Club for 25 years. Marilyn and her husband, Paul,  garden at their rural Rice Lake home. Their garden was chosen as a winning garden in a garden contest for the Country Garden Magazine which is a Better Homes and Gardens publication. It was featured in the August 2011 issue of that magazine. The Saffert garden was also featured in the Eau Claire Leader Telegram in August, 2017, and The Country Today newspaper.  For 7 years Marilyn wrote a weekly gardening column featured in the Rice Lake Chronotype called “Scattered Seeds.”

Hydrangeas – Let’s Get Them Figured Out

Marilyn says hydrangeas are a favorite subject among gardeners. But which ones are really the best? What about that Endless Summer hydrangea that won’t bloom for us? Will the new ones that the garden centers offer to sell us each spring really pan out as advertised? And of the different types--how do we prune them and when? And what about that acid/alkaline deal to change blooms from pink to blue? Are gardeners in zones 3 and 4 really in a state of “zone envy” trying to grow plants that are not happy in our area? Marilyn will tell us about some really great hydrangeas that will truly prosper in our northern gardens.
